Peckham Rye

Photo

It's that tree again. Fairly mild today, no rain, little cloud.

I have no idea why you might be interested in the weather in South
London so here's a photo of Peckham Rye.

Desktops - Physical and Virtual

Nice article (http://www.coolhunting.com/culture/desktops.php) about the physical and virtual desktops of six creative people. It's quite interesting to see how people organise their workspaces. I can't stand clutter in my work area so some of these desktops (both sorts) would drive me up the wall.

For comparison, here is a photo of my physical and virtual desktops.

RIM says co-chief executives step down

RIM announces a management shake up:

> Blackberry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has said its co-chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down in a shake-up.

Will this mark the start of RIM's renaissance, or just another step in
a downward spiral? It would be nice to think that they'll turn things
around, develop successful new products and innovate their way into
exciting new market niches.

I can't really see that happening - they wouldn't be making these
changes if they could see an approaching turning point - but it will
be interesting to see what they do and how things develop.

3D printer makers' rival visions of future

Objects can be created on a computer using free online software such as TinkerCAD or Google Sketchup, before being transferred to the Replicator on a SD memory card. Alternatively other people's designs can be downloaded from Makerbot's community website Thingiverse.

I have no need for something like this and neither the time nor the inclination (nor, I suspect, the requisite skills) to learn how to use it but what a fantastic tool! Apart from the ability to make tools and components on demand, imagine what a generation of 3D hackers might produce given the time? Let's hope these things make it into our schools in decent numbers.

Windows language - keyboard shortcut

I keep getting caught out by the Windows shortcut, Alt-Shift, which switches between the currently installed languagues (assuming you have more than one). For reasons long forgotten I had Russian keyboards installed so, every now and again, I'd mis-hit the keys and type a few words in Russian. Most annoying.

Anyway, if you have a similar problem, hit Alt-Shift to toggle back.

Tesla’s one way valve

Need a one-way valve with no moving parts? Neither do I but here's an impressive video of one in action, just in case you wanted proof that such a thing could exist.

Tesla’s one way valve is mind-blowingly simple and has no moving parts
